Time for an update...

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 19, 2009, 12:25 PM
Well, I've had that last depressing journal entry there for more than a year. And I found a nice journal skin, so I should at least update so I can see how it looks. Let's move on, shall we?

I've been neglecting DA something awful lately; just haven't felt all that creative. I managed to swing a new camera with our tax refund (partly by letting ~sumsquared get a new leather motorcycle jacket - but that was also a safety thing), and I have been taking photos; however, I can't quite get past the feeling that photography is somehow cheating. It probably comes from the debates I used to have with my mother on whether it was actually art - of course it is, but whether mine is, is another story. Though I always argued the positive, some of that must have rubbed off on me.

Yikes, I can't believe I've had an account here for four years! Where does the time go?

At the risk of sounding whiny, I work for the state of CA. Since we've been assigned two furlough days per month since Feb., just got another one, and there are rumors we may have to take a fourth, we're starting to try to find way to make up the difference. ~sumsquared still makes custom boxes, and just got some redwood from a 90-year old house across the street from us (torn down to build yet another generic McMansion, a huge peeve of mine, but that's another story...). I was thinking of putting some on my stuff up for prints, but I'm really not sure anything there is really worth it. I'm just a doodler. I know I've put some of my oekaki fish on notecards as gifts, and people like them, and last year a nature book author and a county in Maryland asked to use three of my photos...I dunno though...

On another note: somewhat late to the party, but I heartily applaud `ArtistsForCharity's pick of charities this year - [link] My son will be starting sixth grade in the fall, while he's in a regular classroom for subjects he's good in, he's been in special education for others; he has an aide for assistance to keep him on track. While he seems pretty normal to us, he's on the autism spectrum - Asperger's in particular. As I've learned more about it the last few years, I see that it's not only him - I recognize that his grandfather has the same traits and I see many of them in myself as well.

Most autism charities seem to forget that autistic children grow up into autistic adults and from the media, you'd almost think such people don't exist. Groups like Autism Speaks are more focused on cures and finding a connection between vaccines and the condition (which study after study has NOT found), than supporting the people who need it who are already here. The Autistic Self-Advocacy Network helps autistic adults be involved in decision-making regarding their own lives, and policy-making on a large scale as well. Some autism organizations would have you believe that autism is a worse thing than cancer, while this organization is working to show everyone that autistics are willing and able to be productive members of society, given the the opportunity. It also works to change the way autistic and other disabled people are perceived; it's a civil rights issue as much as a health one. Since my son is really not that far away from being an adult, this becomes more and more relevant. This can start with language, for starters - you know that little disparaging phrase involving a smaller yellow vehicle used for transport to school? Someone you know may ride or have ridden one.

If I may recommend a few sites on similar subjects as well (check the bookmarked links at the sides for some starting places to read):

Change.org's Autism Blog- written by an adult on the spectrum and a mom of an almost teenage autistic son. Especially 10 Autism Controversies.

Don't Mourn For Us - Jim Sinclair - Essay to parents

Asperger Square 8 -blog by an adult with Aspergers

There are lots of others, too.

I already have a journal here [link] , so you can check that one for updates (I do post friends-only entries occasionally - you'll need an LJ account and to friend me there to read those).

I am only a doodler - a marine biologist by training, so I hope people like what they see here. I was intimidated for awhile by the quality of stuff showing up on the main page, but I see there are other amateurs here, so I'm jumping in.

I'm trying to do something creative on a more regular basis, and like my journal, I hope getting a little feedback inspires me to keep up with it. ;)

I also photograph my spouse's works for his page, since he is a woodworker. Check out his stuff too at :iconsumsquared:

And discovered a lovely and poignant webcomic, that will probably resonate with anyone whose parents may be getting older. Or knowing someone in a number of other situations.

The Walk by Ryan Pequin

This could be any one us, sometime in the future.

My father is 82. We live with him, so we've sort of become the default caretakers - not that he needs much, he's in good shape. Truth to tell, it's mutually beneficial, as we get to live in the house I grew up in, in a neighborhood we could not afford these days. My kids are going to the school I went to as a kid. But I always wonder how this is going to wind up.

I've discussed with my brother, how sometimes I dread knocking on the door of his bedroom, the room where my mother also passed away, and one day, getting no response. And my brother looked at me and said, "You know, Leeanne, that's really the best case scenario."

I dread it. But I know it's going to happen. It may not be for awhile yet. His mother only passed away six years ago, having lived to be a hundred. But I'm trying to be prepared.

I'm It?!

1. I'm wearing purple Crocs with Royal Stewart tartan patterned socks and a man's Hawaiian shirt with palm trees and surfboards on it. I would give the ladies on "What Not to Wear" nightmares and I like it that way. ;p

2. I can see model planes flying outside my office window. Sometimes I get the little helicopters confused with the big ones flying at the Air Base just beyond.

3. I found out Wed. at the dr. I have superficial thrombophlebitis.*

4. There is a DBZ poster on the cube wall behind my monitor at work; it was my coworker's son's and she brought it in for me because he was going to throw it away. Also a Goku alarm clock, because my kids were toddlers at the time I got it, and figured out how to turn the very obnoxious alarm on over and over and over....

5. My second toe is longer than all of my other toes, but my third toe is still longer than my big toe.

6. I just recently got my family into Geocaching - [link] - but we've only found three caches so far. I'm thrilled to see there's a ton of them right near my home and work! A good excuse to get out and go for a walk!

7. I hate beets. There is a picture of me at about six months old, spitting out beets down my chin. My father never remembers this and keeps trying to get me to eat them.

8. I love sea hares - basically a big purple marine slug. I like to pick them up and hug them if they're big enough. This is a strange thing because I am not fond of the big brown slugs in the backyard; they creep me the F out. I still won't kill them though.

*Not serious at all, just an inflamed varicose vein. Sounds like I should be in a nursing home, don't it. :granny:

...You will learn...

< procrastination >
Very excited about Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street opening this month (which does not guarantee I will make it to theater to see it, but excited nevertheless). My best friend Dobkins gave me the LP of the Original Broadway Cast Recording when I was still going to community college back in the early 80's. I was obsessed with it for months afterwards and would go around singing "A Little Priest" at work - causing fast-food customers and coworkers to give me looks as if I was insane. People would ask what the music was and I would tell what it was about; often they would look horrified, with remarks like "How could you write a musical about that?!" Unless they were Sondheim fans, in which case they would join in the duet.

What I've seen of the trailers looks excellent, and Tim Burton was a natural as it's already filled with macabre black humor, as if it were made for him. Who knows, he's around my age, maybe he was influenced by it at the same time I was. ;)

Alan Rickman has always made a great villain and I'm sure he'll be fantastic- Judge Turpin is a pretty creepy character, who you're made to feel deserves what he ultimately gets, but I'm sure my admiration for Mr. Rickman won't dull that in the least. I am less sure about the main characters. Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter look absolutely gorgeous, but I'm so used to the cast recording I hope their voices can live up to it. Len Cariou, the orginal Sweeney, sounded (to me, at least, I never actually saw him perform it) stocky and powerful, a solid baritone; Depp, aside from being a bit willowy, strikes me more as a tenor. Both the leads are rather younger than I imagined the characters being; Angela Lansbury especially, depicted dowdy late middle-age in the original. It wouldn't have been so long ago I would have expected Depp and Bonham-Carter to be playing Antony and Johanna, the younger romantic couple (yes, I know they're both fortyish or close to it, but they're just so...pretty, they just don't seem as mature). I just hope they're actually singing, and not, as I often seem to see with actors not used to it, chanting or speaking (or worse, shouting or screaming, which George Hearn did in the video of the play) along with a score.

Ah well. I'm not out to see a perfect recreation of the original. Tim Burton has yet to disappoint.

*crosses fingers*

< /procrastination >

Edit: On just listening again, if they screw up/leave out "Kiss Me/Ladies in Their Sensitivies," I shall be livid.

Oooh. Goosebumps.

I'm disappointed.

My oldest son had wanted to be Sesshoumaru for Halloween. I was a bit excited since he's a favorite character of mine, too. Probably not anything elaborate (not the the nearly professional ones you see at cons), because I haven't actually sewn anything for about thirteen years; the last time was when I made my own wedding clothes (I got married at the Ren Faire). I've never liked sewing clothes, although I don't mind crafts like stuffed animals and such - costumes seem to fall more in that category.

Anyway, after much searching of pattern books, finding a child's kimono pattern and figuring out how to alter it and how much of each color fabric to buy, trying to remember how to cut out a pattern, and tracing a crapload of stupid little red & white hexagons on fabric that shifted so much none of them are quite the same shape, I was ready to take all the pieces over to my mother-in-law's to try to put everything together. My mother's old sewing machines (both of them) bit the dust last Halloween, and whenever I remembered they needed servicing, there was no money left.

Well, after much futzing around with her machine (damn, every machine has a different bobbin apparatus), I finally got it set up and ready to go. Or so I thought. However, when stepping on the pedal, it would sew about an inch before the bobbin thread tangled underneath the fabric and the needle jammed. We tried to get it to work properly for half an hour before giving up and my MIL came to the conclusion hers needed servicing too. I don't know anyone else with a sewing machine and no money until Halloween day to try to repair mine or possibly buy a new one (I know I saw a couple at Target for about $80).

Oh well. I'm making it big enough that he can wear it to Anime Expo next year, and maybe it can be next year's Halloween costume too. Grandma had some pirate stuff, so maybe we'll make do with that; he didn't seem averse to the idea and even wore the pirate hat home. And anyway the white wig we bought looks like hell; hopefully we can find something better before then.
